Nowhere else in Europe will you find as many river dams as in this region. A total of 12 reservoirs are nested shore to shore in between lush hills and idyllic valleys. Between 1899 and 1985, 12 rivers were dammed in order to provide potable water to the nearby cities as well as managing their seasonal high waters. Six of the lakes are still tapped for potable water, any water activity is banned from them. The other six are open for swimming, windsurfing and even diving. Hikers will find an astonishing nature around all of them. Ready to gape and feel very small?
