Italy’s Apennine Mountains know how to hide their beauty. Many people who inhabit these areas do not know about some of the classic back roads, epic views and interesting places that are so close to their homes. Most of the time, in fact, great beauty is to be found in those places that we often pass quickly on our way from one place to another. And so, Mugello is often overlooked because we dash from Bologna to Florence, either on the new motorway or in the high-speed train tunnel.
I knew nothing, for example, about the small meteorite that fell on a roof in Piancaldoli in August 1968, or the legend that circulates about the Sasso di San Zenobi (or Zanobi). In this Collection, you explore both of these places, pass very close to singer Gianni Morandi's birthplace, plus lots more.
Basically, it’s a circuit not to be missed. Since it’s all on asphalt and challenging, I recommend breaking it up into two days if you don't have much training behind you. It starts in Barberino di Mugello, perhaps the capital of the area, just north of Lake Bilancino. Home to the splendid Villa Medici di Cafaggiolo, Barberino is also home to a very popular outlet store, more or less the opposite of what those undertaking this bike tour are looking for. So off we go!
Over 3,000 metres (9,843 ft) of elevation gain, Apennine passes to cross, and some epic, historic cycling climbs await you. You won't need much besides a racing bike and basic spares: you'll pass through several villages and find everything you need along the way. Moreover, it is a Tour suitable for any season but beware of the winter cold, which can create ice on the less frequented roads. A good level of fitness and stamina is required to take on this challenge.
This Collection has a twin, a little further east: take a look at that one too, if all those climbs aren't enough for you: komoot.com/collection/1869873/mugello-orientale-non-tutte-ma-tante-salite.
