English Romantic-era painter, John Constable, immortalised his native Suffolk in a series of paintings of the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hanging in some of the most prestigious galleries around the world, these 1802 works of art immortalise the rural beauty of the landscape.
If, like me, you’re not content with just looking at the area in a painting, then the best way to truly experience ‘Constable Country’ and the nearby Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB is to ride a bike through it. Cycling a complete loop of Suffolk is an enriching experience, and due to its size and terrain, it makes for an excellent long weekend trip.
Starting in Ipswich, the largest city in Suffolk, with its excellent train connections to the rest of the country, you’ll follow the River Orwell east to the Suffolk Coast and Heaths AONB. From here you’ll experience the finest countryside Suffolk has to offer, from winding lanes and coastal waterways, to vibrant market and seaside towns.
Heading in-land at the Norfolk border, you’ll ride on the quiet country roads of north Suffolk, before following the county line south and then east, towards Dedham Vale AONB, the heart of Constable Country. The route is predominantly flat with a few undulating sections, so it is suitable for all levels of road cyclist.
Each of the 3 stages has a mid-way cafe stop recommendation, but one of the joys of Suffolk is the number of country pubs and quaint cafes that can be found in every village and town. The locals are always extremely friendly, and are well used to cyclists. You’ll usually get a warm welcome and a space to park your bike.
There are plentiful accommodation options at the end of each stage, from guest houses to B&Bs and hotels. If you’re of the bikepacking persuasion, then Suffolk is littered with excellent campsites where you can pitch your tent at the end of the day.
I’ve included the full Tour if you wish to edit the length and days to suit your needs.
