The North Worcestershire Path is a mid-distance hiking trail that explores idyllic waterways, reservoirs, ancient royal hunting grounds, protected wildlife habitats, woodlands and rolling hills. It crosses North Worcestershire from west to east on varied trails with breathtaking views of the Black Country and Birmingham Plateau.
Starting from Bewdley, the route heads north alongside the River Severn to Upper Arley before rising eastwards through Eymore Wood to reach farmland with expansive views of the West Midlands. The trail continues through patchwork fields, crosses the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal and then begins its journey around the outskirts of Birmingham.
Heading to the Clent Hills, the route rises over Walton Hill before meandering south into Waseley Hills Country Park and Lickey Hills Country Park. The final section descends to Upper Bittell Reservoir and continues east past Hollywood to finish at Major's Green on the southern edge of Birmingham.
In this Collection, I’ve divided the 36-mile (58 km) North Worcestershire Path into three stages of between 11 and 13.4 miles (18 - 22 km). This itinerary is aimed at those with some hiking experience and a reasonable level of fitness. It’s possible to divide the route into more stages as it comes close to Birmingham and many other towns and villages
Highlights along the way include: the picturesque Georgian town of Bewdley; hiking along the River Severn; the curious Four Stones monument on the Clent Hills; Walton Hill, the highest point on the Clent Hills; spectacular views atop Calcot Hill; Waseley Hills Country Park; Beacon Hill, and Lickey Hills Country Park.
For the most part, the route follows well-maintained paths that don’t require technical expertise. You’ll need good quality hiking footwear and waterproofs in all seasons. Sunscreen is important at warmer times of the year.
Each stage finishes close to somewhere with accommodation and places for food and drink which are detailed in the Tour descriptions. While you’ll pass places to resupply en route, I recommend bringing enough water for each hike and some snacks.
You can hike the North Worcestershire Path at any time of year and each season offers a unique perspective on the landscapes. Most people choose to walk the route from west to east, but there’s nothing stopping you from hiking it in the opposite direction.
To get to the starting point of Bewdley by public transport, first head to Kidderminster, which has a railway station with good connections to Birmingham. From there, catch the 8, 291, 292, or 125 bus service into Bewdley. Alternatively, you could walk 3.2 miles (5.1 km). At the end point in Major’s Green, you’ll need to hike around 10 minutes to Whitlocks End train station, which has good links into Birmingham.
