The Isarco Valley is an ideal place to learn about bicycle travel. In fact, this valley in South Tyrol bordering Austria has everything you need for a fantastic cycling holiday.
In this Collection, I propose an easy 100-kilometre (62 mi) route, with little elevation gain. Pedalling along the Isarco Valley, you’ll get to know the fantastic cycle paths of South Tyrol, on almost exclusively paved terrain. The historic cities of Sterzing, Brixen and Bolzano also lie en route. You set off from Brenner train station on the Austrian border and end in Bolzano. I recommend reaching Brenner by train: you can take your bike onboard, without disassembling it.
If you’re just getting into bike touring, the cycle path along the Isarco Valley is perfect. It traces a former railway line, which lets you ride carefree. 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) of elevation gain stands between Brenner and Bolzano. It’s definitely worth taking your time to appreciate the sites, small towns and the river en route. The South Tyrolean cuisine is fantastic too. You’ll find plenty of places to stop for typical dumplings, paired with a glass of wine.
The best season to embark on this journey is from late May to early September. In summer, you can ride in light clothing, but don't forget a warm layer, which may come in handy in the evening and morning hours.
