Über Vikos-Aoos UNESCO Global Geopark
A warm welcome to the Vikos-Aoos UNESCO Global Geopark!The Geopark, which was founded in 2010, is situated at the north-western corner of the administrative regional unit of Ioannina in the Region of Epirus, covering the greater part of the municipalities of Zagori and Konitsa. The high mountains of the Northern Pindos dominate the area: Μt Smolikas (2,637 m), Μt Timfi (2,497 m), Μt Trapezitsa (2,022 m) and Μt Nemertsika (2,209 m). The main rivers in the area are the Aoos and its tributaries, the Voidomatis and the Sarantaporos.Due to their great ecological and aesthetic value, all the mountains of the Vikos - Aoos Geopark are included in Europe’s Natura 2000 network of protected areas. Large parts of the Northern Pindos National Park and the whole of Vikos - Aoos National Park lie within the Geopark. Many hiking trails lead to the high peaks of Mt Smolikas, Mt Timfi, Mt Nemertsika and the other mountains of the area.Observe wild animals, roam through different vegetation zones and enjoy fascinating panoramic views from impressive mountain peaks.
