Located on the border between the Hautes-Alpes and Piedmont, the Grand Sommeiller Pass marks the boundary between France and Italy. It’s one of those rare traversable mountain passes that approaches 3,000 metres (9,842 ft) in altitude. This high-mountain passage immerses you in the heart of pristine, untouched spaces. For two days, you’ll be immersed in one of the most beautiful massifs in the northern Alps, the Mont-Cenis massif.
From dense pine forests to barren peaks, the routes in this Collection display a striking contrast. You’ll traverse landscapes of great natural and cultural richness. The bustling summer population of Bardonnechia, and its streets filled with tourists, contrasts with the tranquillity of the surrounding mountains.
This itinerary is designed for two days, covering a total of 155 kilometres (96 mi) and over 5,000 metres (16,400 ft) of cumulative ascent. However, you can adjust it to your preference.
The Clarée Valley marks the beginning and end of your adventure. This natural site offers sumptuous landscapes and preserved heritage. The first stage leads to the Sommeiller Pass via a long, drivable track before taking an unmarked high-mountain route to reach the Maurienne Valley. The second stage ventures again to over 2,500 metres (8,200 ft) above sea level, this time on the slopes of the Col de la Roue. After a long, fast-paced descent, you reunite with Bardonnechia for a small culinary break before heading back to France.
This Collection features very technical sections with long ascents and very steep descents. It requires significant technical skill, especially for the descent on the French side after the Sommeiller Pass. Be prepared to carry your bike on these two days, whether on the descent from Sommeiller or the next day during the final phase of the ascent to the Col de la Roue. I recommend a mountain bike with a minimum tyre width of 2.2 inches for added comfort. This can either be hardtail or full suspension with a cassette of 51 or 52 teeth if you are using a single chainring.
Considering the altitudes and climate of the region, you should only undertake this journey during the summer period, from late June to mid-September. You are venturing into a high-altitude environment, so it is essential to check the weather before embarking on the passes.
Water and resupply points are easily accessible in the initial ascent sections and non-existent on the high peaks. I’d advise setting out with a minimum 1.5-litre water reserve and bringing warm clothing. Remember to reserve accommodation in advance as places get booked up quickly during the summer.
Safe travels!

Dieser erste Tag beginnt mit einem Teil auf der Straße. Die Route beginnt in Briançon.
