The Italian part of the Via Francigena. In my case from Pavia to Rome as it was part of a longer trip from the Lago Maggiore (Verbania) to Sicily (to a small village not far from Taormina) in 2018.It is a wonderful trip. In my view, a MTB is not needed. Yet, use wider tires as large parts of the Italian part of the Via Francigena are on gravel roads. I did it on a travel bike with a Pinion gear box and 55-622 tires. There is an app for the Via Francigena where you can save the track for offline use. I would highly recommend doing so as the signposting is often small and not always perfect. See also

Achtung, 2x versehentlich Hügel/Berg runtergefahren anstatt rechtzeitig abzubiegen, ca. bei km 73 und dann bei km 77 (anstatt rechtzeitig nach Formello abzubiegen)
